Primary Care Residency Program

Core Faculty

The Yale Department of Internal Medicine has a large and diverse faculty comprised of clinicians, physician-scientists, and clinician-educators who are leaders in their areas of expertise. Common to all faculty is a strong commitment to our educational programs. Residents training at Yale will have direct access to this group of talented faculty who will serve as their ward and ICU attendings, continuity clinic preceptors, ambulatory block attendings, advisors, mentors, and role models.

A particular strength of the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency is the opportunity to work extensively with a core group of full-time faculty who have ongoing contact with the houseofficers throughout all three years of training. This group of academic general internists are fulltime members of the Yale Section of General Internal Medicine. Their main offices are at the community hospital site where they attend on the wards and provide all of the continuity clinic precepting. These faculty have been hired by the Department because of their excellence as clinician-educators and their specific training in graduate medical education and curriculum development. Program faculty have developed published curricula that are now used by many other internal medicine residency programs. Residents interested in medical education as a career niche or as an area of scholarly interest have ample opportunity to work with this creative and enthusiastic group of faculty.

To assist each resident in his or her individual growth, we have developed a structured advisor program. Each houseofficer is assigned a member of the full-time faculty to serve as a primary advisor/mentor. For residents in the categorical program this is the individual who precepts the resident in their weekly continuity practice thus establishing a close working relationship early during internship that will grow throughout training. For interns in the preliminary program the Program Director and Associate Program Directors serve the role of academic advisor. The advisors are responsible for performing routine clinical evaluation exercises, reviewing biannual summary evaluations and developing an education action plan. He/She is also responsible for providing career advice and for making connections for the resident with other members of the faculty. Advisors often develop close relationships with their advisees that last well beyond completion of training. In addition, the residency Program Director, Associate Program Directors and Chief Residents are always available to the housestaff for any issue as are all members of the faculty.
