Primary Care Residency Program

Diversity

One of the central goals of the program is to create an atmosphere where various cultural and ethnic differences among patients, staff, and housestaff are not only recognized, but respected, understood and embraced. The diversity of the peoples with which residents will interact is an unparalleled opportunity for learning.

Residency.
2007 Primary Care Residency Graduating Class

Our program is proud of its diversity. Fifty percent of our housestaff are women, and more than thirty percent are members of under-represented minority groups. Others come from an endless array of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Approximately ten percent of our housestaff have children and we strongly encourage the spouses, partners, significant others and children of our residents to become active members of our community. You will encounter new people, new ideas, new ways of thinking, and a stronger awareness of those things that make us different from one another, and more importantly, those things that make us all the same. We learn the most about ourselves when we have the opportunity to see ourselves through the eyes of others who have different backgrounds and perspectives. We believe that this opportunity should be provided to each other as peers in the residency program and that this is essential to fully develop as a physician who will care for patients who themselves come from a wide array of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Applicants wishing to contact current housestaff from backgrounds similar to their own are invited to email the residency manager at: Barbara.wanciak@yale.edu.
