On behalf of the faculty and trainees of the Department of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, I invite you to explore our joint websites. Our Department, although relatively small in the number of faculty (75), has a remarkable spectrum of achievement in research, clinical care, and education.
The Department has an operating budget of $45 million and generated $23 million in NIH grant dollars and $16 million in fee-for-service income in FY06. The Department ranks in the top 5 for NIH funding among the 129 pediatric departments in the U.S. Considerable support for research also derives from the Juvenile Diabetes esearch Foundation, the Gerber Foundation, the March of Dimes, the Hood Foundation, and numerous other private organizations. The Yale Child Health Research Center (one of but 20 NICHD-funded pediatric research institutes in the U.S.) and the Pediatric Scientists Development Program, a $10 million training grant headquartered at Yale catalyze research for fellows and junior faculty. Breakthrough discoveries—curcumin for cystic fibrosis, the artificial pancreas, and a gene linked to familial dyslexia—have come from our faculty in the past year.
Our residents reap the benefits of training in an academic medical center and at strong community hospitals in Bridgeport and New Haven. An active and energetic phalanx of community pediatricians offer their offices and their inestimable expertise to our residents. More than 80,000 visits occur at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital each year: 26,000 in the pediatric emergency room, 25,000 in our pediatric continuity clinic, 31,000 in our pediatric sub-specialty clinic, and 6,000 on our general in-patient pediatric service. We are the only trauma 1 pediatric emergency in the state and provide the only ECMO and bone marrow transplant services in Connecticut. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement recently designated Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital a Mentor Hospital for our innovative program in rapid response teams (PICU outreach). Programs and journal clubs in evidence-based medicine and bioethics are avidly attended by our residents. An innovative rotation in sedation medicine and novel curricula in both ambulatory pediatrics and palliative care expand our residents’ skills in patient care.
Synergy with the Department of Medicine is evident in four shared training grants (Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, Immunology, and Pulmonology). Pediatric training grants in Critical Care, Endocrinology, Diabetes, Infectious Diseases, and Perinatal Medicine amplify the opportunities for those seeking advanced sub-specialty training after residency. Joint clinics for adolescents with cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease provide seamless care as adolescents transition to adulthood.
Our Department’s mission is CLEAR:
Clinical care that is outstanding
Leadership for the global pediatric community
Education for physiciains, allied health professionals, patients, and families
Advocacy that promotes child health and development
Research that is innovative, insightful, and state-of-the-art.
We look forward to welcoming you to the outstanding opportunities here at Yale.
