Application Requirements for Internship
Applications to any of the three (3) Yale Internal Medicine Residency Programs for a first year position (internship) will only be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
- If you are graduating or have graduated from a U.S. Medical School, you must contact your medical school’s student affairs office or other designated dean’s office. Your dean’s office will provide you with the information and the software for ERAS. The ERAS Web Site can be located at http://www.aamc.org/.
- If you are a Canadian Medical Student, please contact the Canadian Resident Matching Service, 151 Slater Street, Suite 802, Ottawa, Ontario, K1P-5H3 Canada, or call (613) 237-0075 for ERAS processing information.
- If you are a graduate of a foreign medical school interested in applying to this program you must contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for application materials and eligibility requirement. In addition to being certified by the ECFMG, foreign medical school graduates must meet the specific criteria of the Yale University Department of Internal Medicine Residency Programs as outlined in the section “Foreign Medical School Graduate Requirements:” below.

If you are interested in applying to more than one Yale Internal Medicine Residency Program, you must apply separately to each program through ERAS.
* CATEGORICAL refers to a 3-year program. PRELIMINARY refers to a 1-year program.
** The Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program is a 4-year, categorical program; 2 years of Medicine and 2 years of Pediatrics. A preliminary program is not offered in the Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program.

- Photograph (optional but preferred to track applicants after interviews)
- Official Medical School Transcripts.
- Graduates of medical schools in the US and Canada must have attended a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the US must have attended a medical school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- USMLE Transcripts or Complex Transcripts from Osteopathic Medical School Graduates. OSTEO. Generally, because Yale is such a competitive program, most applicants score 85 or higher on the USMLE. However, this is a general score and is does not exclude applicants with USMLE scores lower than 85.
Foreign Medical School Graduate Requirements:
- All of the above listed under “Requirements.”
- Documentation of successful completion of an Internal Medicine clerkship and/or subinternship of at least eight weeks' duration at an ACGME accredited U.S., Puerto Rican, or Canadian medical school. This training must have involved direct patient care responsibilities for at least 2 months. The Yale Department of Internal Medicine can not arrange for these experiences at the Yale University School of Medicine. These clinical experiences must be completed by November 30th. Documentation must include the date and location of the clerkship and/or subinternship training experience. This letter must be submitted electronically via the ERAS post office.
OR - Documentation of successful completion of residency training at an ACGME accredited U.S. program at a U.S. teaching hospital. This training must have involved direct patient care responsibilities for at least 2 months. Observer status or consultation rotations do not meet this requirement. Documentation must include the date and location of the residency training experience. This letter must be submitted electronically via the ERAS post office.
- You must be eligible for a J-1 Visa sponsored by the ECFMG. Exchange visitors coming in under the “J” program for graduate medical education or training must meet certain special requirements. They include having passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in Medical Sciences, demonstrating competency in English, begin automatically subject to the two-year foreign resident requirement (later), and being subject to time limits on duration of their program. They must also be able to show proof of eligibility to work by providing valid work authorization papers (copy of DS-2019 and Passport with I-94 card attached) on or before the first day of orientation or work. All exchange “J” visitors must be certified by ECFMG. We require both CSA and English language proficiency examination dates must be valid at the time of the first day of work. Participants in the “J” exchange visitor program must have sufficient funds to cover all expenses.
- Graduates of medical school outside the US and Canada must meet one of the following:
- Have received a current valid ECFMG Certificate and passed the CSA examination from the Educational Commission for Foreign medical Gradates
- Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction.
- Completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME–accredited medical school.
Interview and Selection Procedure:
- Interviews take place in December and January.
- Applications must be completed by the end of December to be considered for review or the application will not be considered for review by the Selection Committee.
- Applications will be reviewed by Selection Committee Faculty once all the requirements listed above have been received by the residency program through ERAS.
- Interviews are by email invitation only. Invitations to interview are sent through the ERAS post office by email to the applicant’s email address as indicated on the ERAS application.
- Applicants who have not met our requirements will be notified by email through the ERAS post office email system.
- In exceptional cases where inability to interview and visit on one of the listed residency interview dates is a hardship, arrangements for an interview at other times may be arranged by contacting the Residency Program’s Senior Administrative Assistant. Under these circumstances, you may be assured that this will not compromise your chances of selection.
- We will be unable to interview applicants who appear without making previous arrangements.
Application Procedure for Senior Residents (PGY2 and above):
If a senior residency position becomes available within any of the three (3) Yale Internal Medicine Residency Programs, those applicants who have completed their first year of internship will have preference. All the intern requirements listed under the Application Procedures for Internship apply to senior resident applicants.
